Kindergarten Curriculum Overview
Reading Phonics, ELA - Skills are introduced and developed using the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys series
and Kinder Phonics. These skills include:
- Letter Recognition (Capital and Lowercase)
- Phonological Awareness
- Blending sounds for fluency and Decoding skills
- High frequency words
- Print Concepts (track words left to right, top to bottom, page by page)
- Comprehension strategies including identifying story elements, sequence of events, author's purpose,
making connections to self, others, and world, etc.
- Listening skills
- Handwriting
- Writing skills and vocabulary
- Grammar work identifying nouns, verbs(descriptive or sensory), punctuation
- Poetry Journals
Guided Reading - Children are assessed and grouped based on their development of reading skills.
Small group instruction is scheduled daily. A-Z Learning is used and the online component is Raz Kids
Math The McGraw Hill Math Series is used to develop the following math concepts
- Counting 0 - 100
- Compare numbers
- Counting on from a given number
- Counting by fives and tens
- Addition
- Subtraction
- Measurement
- Composing and decomposing numbers
- Geometry
- Numbers 1 - 20
Science and Social Studies - Topics are explored and developed through projects and the use of Scholastic Magazines
- Awareness of Environment
- Healthy Habits
- Awareness of Community
Religion The "I AM Special Series" focuses on God's love for them, and the church seasons of Advent,
Christmas, Lent, and Easter
- Simple Prayers
- Christian Attitude
- Awareness of God's Creation
